And how to save on its purchase

In 2017, I mastered snowboarding. I used to think it was difficult and expensive.

It turned out that a day of riding on the board costs like dinner at a restaurant.

flourished in the USSR skiing, therefore, resorts and slopes remained around large cities. I learned to ride in Moscow, I'll tell you on her example.

In Moscow there is an indoor complex "Snezhkom". It works all year round, so you can get on a snowboard here both in winter and in summer. When snow falls, open slopes begin to work - "Kant" in Moscow, "Volen" and "Sorochany" in the Moscow region. Usually the skiing season lasts from December to March.

Snezhkom and Kant are small complexes. They come to ride for the day. In "Volen" and "Sorochany" you can spend a weekend or a vacation. The first time I rode in "Snowball". There is one slope and a fenced off track for beginners.

If you plan to start on open slopes, choose training trails with a gentle slope. They are marked in green on the diagrams. After a few lessons, I was able to ride the blue slopes. Red and black are still too dangerous for me.

A lift takes you up the mountain, and you have to pay for it. If you walk, you can ride for free. But on foot you will climb for a long time, and move out in a few minutes.

The cost of skiing is calculated in two ways: by the number of lifts and by the hour. At the entrance to the lift there is a turnstile. To pass, you need to attach a ski pass - a special magnetic card. It is given at the checkout after payment. The ski pass can be for the time or for the number of lifts. The countdown starts after the first pass.

On weekdays, skiing is 1.5 times cheaper than on weekends. Sometimes there are promotions on the slopes. I bought a discount coupon at Snezhkom, and 4 hours of skiing on a day off cost me 1700 R instead of 3800 R.

Snowboard and ski suit rental: 1000-2000 R

For skiing you need a snowboard with special boots, waterproof winter clothes and a helmet. Normal winter clothing is not suitable for skiing. From falls, it quickly gets wet, and it becomes cold to ride. I rode in a snowboard jacket, pants and gloves with a special moisture-resistant impregnation.

For the first time, I decided not to buy anything, but to rent everything or ask friends. If I didn't like it, I wouldn't lose anything.

2000 R

it is worth renting a snowboard and boots on the slope for 5 hours. At the rental point, rent will be cheaper

Snowboard and boots can be rented on any slope for 2000 R for 5 hours. On some slopes you can rent clothes and a helmet, but this is rare. In Moscow, only Snezhkom offers full equipment.

You can save money if you rent clothes and a board not on a slope, but at a rental point. There, a complete set of clothes, along with a board and boots, will cost 1000-1500 R per day. Private rental shops are located close to the slopes. The easiest way to find them is on Yandex Map.

Instructor: 2000 R per session

I was lucky: my friend taught me to ride - it was free. But not everyone who skates well himself will be able to teach another. If I wasn't sure about a friend, I would take an instructor.

Professional instructors work in all complexes. In Moscow individual lesson costs 2000 R per hour, class in a group - 1300 R. If you take several classes at once, it will turn out cheaper.

After five lessons with an instructor and three days of independent skiing, I began to feel confident on the slope.

How to choose an instructor

Ilya Kosyachenko

snowboard instructor

If there are no recommendations from friends, ask the instructor to show an ID or certificate. In Russia, the most common certificates are issued by the National League of Instructors. Their authenticity can be checked on the isiarussia.ru website.

Instructors are assigned categories: A, B or C. For beginners, a category C instructor is suitable. If you want to learn more advanced riding styles such as carving and freeride, you will have to find a category B instructor. Category A instructors are the most experienced. They can teach any style of riding.

A good instructor will teach you how to fall in the first lesson. To avoid injury, you must be able to correctly and safely group when falling. To learn this, theory is not enough. It is necessary to bring the actions in the fall to automatism.

It usually takes 2 to 5 lessons to master basic skills. How much time you need depends on your skill and the experience of the instructor.

Own equipment

For the first time, equipment can be rented, but for regular skiing it makes sense to buy your own snowboard and clothes. I will analyze with my own example how much it costs and what you can save on.

Snowboard

Four basic characteristics snowboard: size, stiffness, shape and material.

Board size is the length in centimeters. It is selected according to the style of skiing, height and weight of the snowboarder. Valid for universal boards general rule: The snowboard must be up to the chin. For freeride you need a longer board, for freestyle you need a shorter one.

Freeride is riding in deep snow on unprepared tracks.

Freestyle is skiing with jumps, spins and tricks on ski jumps.

Manufacturers usually post size charts for boards on their websites. On the Bataleon Snowboards website there are such signs in the product card

Rigidity affects the style of riding. It is measured on a scale from 1 to 10. Freestyle boards are the softest, they have 2-3 points. Universal boards have an average rigidity, 4-5 points. For freeriding and fast riding, you need a harder board - 7-8 points.

There are many forms of snowboarding. Boards are symmetrical and asymmetrical, with different deflection and edge shape. While you are learning, it is better to choose a classic symmetrical snowboard. On such a board, you can ride with both the right and left foot forward.

It is important to pay attention to the deflection. It affects the ease of control of the snowboard. There are 4 main types of camber: camber, rocker, flat and hybrid.

Camber is classic look deflection. At correct technique such a board crashes well into the snow, but any mistake leads to a fall. Learning to camber is hard.

A rocker is a board with raised edges. When turning, this reduces the chances of catching snow and falling. Rocker is considered the best backbend for beginners.

Flat is a board without deflection. It is also suitable for teaching.

Hybrid refers to different combinations of deflections. They can affect speed and handling. The exact characteristics are described by manufacturers on their websites.

The main material from which snowboards are made is wood. To make the board lighter and stronger, wood is reinforced with foam, plastic, carbon or fiberglass.

Material and assembly technology affect the price. The steeper, the more expensive. This doesn't mean that an expensive snowboard will last longer or won't chip. Even the simplest boards are now made quite reliable, and the most expensive ones are also erased in 3-4 seasons.

I paid for a new snowboard

It is worth paying attention to the surface of the "slipper" - the lower, sliding part of the snowboard. It comes in two types - extruded and sintered. Both coatings are made from polyethylene, but applied differently. Extruded is cheaper and easier to maintain. Sintered is more expensive, but glides better and lasts longer.

Snowboards cost from 5 to 100 thousand rubles. You can save if you buy boards from last year's collections. Manufacturers release the same snowboard models every year, only the design changes. Collections of previous years are 10-60% cheaper.

Different styles of riding require different boards. For example, for freeriding, riding in deep snow on unprepared tracks, a long and wide board is suitable, for freestyle, technical riding with tricks and jumps, a soft, short and symmetrical board is suitable. For fast skiing, you need a hard board with an elongated nose.

For a beginner for the first few seasons, a universal snowboard is suitable. It is also called "All Mountain". This board has a symmetrical shape and medium rigidity. It is good for learning and skiing on prepared slopes.

How to spend and save money wisely

After a few sessions, I realized that I wanted to spin and jump like the cool freestylers. Therefore, I immediately decided to buy a soft, short and symmetrical board. The model I needed was not in the store. I searched on classifieds sites. As a result, I bought a new snowboard at Yulia for 15,000 R instead of 20,000 R.

When buying from hand, I paid attention to the condition of the edges and the sliding surface. The edge is the metal edge that wraps around the entire snowboard. There should be no chips or hooks on the edge. And the "slipper" - the reverse side of the snowboard - is scratched after the first ride, so you need to look at the degree of surface wear. If there are few scratches, the board will last a few more seasons.

Boots and Bindings

Boots vary in stiffness: from 1 to 10. Soft - more comfortable. Rigid ones allow better control of the board. For beginners, medium hardness is recommended - from 3 to 5.

13 000 R

I paid for the boots. It was the most expensive purchase since snowboarding.

The handling of the snowboard depends on the comfort of the boots. Boots should fit snugly, but they should be comfortable.

I picked up shoes in a store with a large selection. I tried on models from different brands and chose the most comfortable. Before buying, the seller recommended to sit in the boots for another 10 minutes to make sure that the legs do not get tired.

Where to buy equipment

There are few branded snowboard shops in Moscow. But there are specialized sports shops and shopping malls. I went to "Kant", "Gravity 9.8", "Trial-sport", "Sportmarathon", "Trajectory". From shopping centers I visited "Roll Hall", "Extreme" and "Sportex".

In all stores, I always asked for a discount, and they gave me one.

Some models of boots in foreign online stores are cheaper. But before ordering, I recommend that you definitely find and try on the same model in a regular store so as not to make a mistake with the size. For example, my snowboard boots turned out to be two sizes larger than my normal shoe size.

Mounts also differ in rigidity. Rigid bindings are used by professionals for specific riding styles. For normal riding, you need soft bindings. The most common model is the classic fastener fasteners. There are bindings that are fastened when stepped on. They are called "Step-on", are rare and cost 3-4 times more. But, they say, it is very convenient.

When riding, I did not notice the difference between cheap and expensive classic bindings. Choose the model that will be convenient for you to fasten. It is best to try to buckle up right with thick gloves. On a slope, this will have to be done often.

Jacket and trousers

When I bought skiing clothes, I paid attention to three main indicators: water resistance, vapor permeability and warmth.

Water repellency tissues are indicated in millimeters of water column. For example, ordinary rain and sleet create a pressure of 2000 mm of water column, and a downpour - 5000-8000 mm. A jacket with a water resistance of 3000 mm will stay dry in light rain, but will not withstand a downpour.

Falls on the snow create a lot of pressure, so snowboard jackets are made with an impregnation of 10,000 mm or more. I have a jacket with 10,000 mm impregnation. I did not get wet even after 3 hours of skiing in light rain. Waterproof clothing cannot be washed. From washing, the impregnation is washed off.

Vapor permeability is responsible for how the fabric wicks sweat away from the body. Vapor permeability is indicated in grams per square meter. The higher the indicator, the faster the moisture evaporates, but the worse the jacket retains heat. I chose the medium option at 10,000 g/m².

Heat depends on the amount of insulation. It is usually indicated in grams. The warmest jackets I've seen have 175g of insulation on the body and 60g each in the sleeves. My jacket has 80 g of insulation on the body and 60 g each in the sleeves. I freeze easily, but in this jacket I feel comfortable when skiing from +5 °C to -10 °C. If it's colder outside, I wear a fleece under my jacket.

When choosing a jacket, I paid attention to a few little things that I lacked in rented clothes.

Ski pass pocket on the sleeve. It is convenient to have such a pocket: put your ski pass there, put your hand to the validator - and go. Otherwise, you have to take off your gloves every time and get the ski pass out of your usual pocket.

Internal pockets for the mask and personal items help me on every ride. You can put your phone or documents in them and not be afraid that they will get wet.
