Oktyabrsky or by train to Kostylevo station. Planes from Moscow (or St. Petersburg) to Cherepovets depart daily, the journey takes about 1 hour.

By tradition, at the beginning of 2008 I went to the Arkhangelsk region. Last year I was in for a strong bummer in the form of far from northern weather, but this time everything was very good. “Beautiful,” I thought, watching from the window the landscapes of the Russian north, illuminated by the winter sun. Who, apparently reading my mind, decided not to show up for a week. February began.

Shangali is a fairly large village in the Ustyansky district of the Arkhangelsk region. I can also call this area my historical homeland, since my mother's parents come from here, and many relatives live here.

In Soviet times, Shangaly was a district center, but closer to perestroika, it was moved to a more convenient Oktyabrsky settlement, which is 15 minutes away by car. The former status is evidenced by a typical two-story house of the fifties, where the district committee used to be located.

Most of the houses are wooden, which is much more practical in the north. Firstly, there is a lot of forest here, and it costs less than brick, and secondly, wooden houses are an order of magnitude better suited to the local climate.

There are very old houses built back in the thirties, such as this three-story house with interesting traditional carvings. But amenities are on the street.

To compensate for the lack of these amenities, almost everyone here has baths, concentrated on the banks of reservoirs.

In principle, in Russia you will not surprise anyone with washing clothes in an ice hole, harvesting firewood or a well.

It is clear that there is quite comfortable housing, but still, most of the development is made up of private houses, traditional for the Russian countryside.

And those who have money prefer something more original. This man was apparently doing well, but then some problems appeared - the tower turned into a long-term construction.

Even the oldest houses, despite the lack of toilets, are plastered with satellite dishes.

Indeed, with the usual ones, you can only watch “First”, “Russia” and “Vesti-sport” here (the latter - with a very bad signal). Vesti-sports is a very useful channel here, because the people, no joke, are sporty. As far as I understand, local skiers often take all the prizes at the all-Russian championships. Which is not surprising - you get up at 9 in the morning, look out the window, and there, in the gardens, young people are training with might and main.

This nearby is a school, the tallest building in this village. And students go skiing in physical education. Physical education without skis is not imagined in the north, I remember the frank surprise of a girl from Severomorsk, who found out that we had never gone skiing in physical education.

It is not clear why exactly in the gardens, because next to the school there is a stadium littered with snow.

According to the sign, disabled people are running across the road.

Shangals have a very elongated shape, and stretch along a rather long main street, which bears the name, you will never guess, st. Lenin.

So long that residents have to take a bus to get from one end of the village to the other. In addition to the bus, timber trucks are constantly and at high speed driving along Lenin Street. To the west - empty, to the east - loaded with pine round timber. Timber trucks travel very often, showing well that if there is still something left in Russia, it is only because initially there was a lot of it. Only when you see such a barbaric scale, you begin to understand the meaning of the phrase "Russia is a resource power."

The center of Shingal consists of shops of a modern type. The assortment there, by the way, is normal, only everything costs much more than in Belgorod.

There are also a couple of offices for connecting to cellular communications in the person of Megafon, which I hate (I must admit that Megafon acted quite competently, expanding at the expense of “unprofitable” regions of the country. Although MTS is also accepted here, from the point of view of Megafon subscribers here, and in many places also a monopoly).

Finally, there is a house of culture, where the wife of my second cousin, who knows the local folklore well, organizes events.

In DK there is a good collection of various antique utensils from all over the area that you can open a local history museum. And also they are engaged in the restoration of old crafts.

There is production in Shangals, and it is even developing. The nineties were very hard on the whole country, but they were even harder on the countryside, especially in areas with low population density and far from the center.

I saw several workshops that produced something. But it seems that the most promising industry here (of course, in addition to deforestation) is tourism.

Malinovka is a village located on the other side of the Ustya River from Shangal. My grandmother spent her childhood there.

You can get there by crossing the river.

If it is impossible to cross the ice, then there is a suspension bridge, which appeared several years ago and greatly helped the residents. Before that, it was impossible to get to the other side, for this you had to walk several kilometers to the road bridge.

Malinovka is a winter resort. There is a ski base with good pistes of different lengths (up to ten kilometers) and a children's and youth sport school, whose pupils, as I have already said, show decent results not only locally, but also on an all-Russian scale. The family of local entrepreneurs-philanthropists should be given due credit for this.

The ski track goes through the centuries-old northern taiga. The snow was so deep that I could sink in up to my waist.

Just fabulous places with a real Russian winter, there is no other way to say it.

Tourists coming here stop in a tourist village, where it is very civilized, comfortable and equipped "in a European manner." I had to rest in similar winter resorts in the USA, and here, I tell you, it is no worse. The village is expanding rapidly.

Gentlemen rest solid.

And local children have something to do.

Also opened in January ski slope. For extreme people, of course, a little low, but inexperienced people will like it. If the clouds are low, the light reflects off them and creates the illusion of northern lights from afar.

So the future is here.
