Chub in May what to catch. About the chub Yu. Yusupov - from A to Z. Spinning suitable for catching

Chub fishing

Once, about 6-7 years ago, one of my good acquaintances told me with such enthusiasm about his successes in catching chub, about all the delights of hunting this cautious predator, that I involuntarily caught fire with this idea myself. We decided with him on the next weekend to go to the places he had already divorced, to go fishing. It was about Don. We rafted on a boat, downstream, along a steep bank, overgrown with trees and bushes. My friend, from time to time, anchored the boat, "by eye" determining the "chub" places. Most often, these were deep bays, with tree branches hanging over the water, or places with sunken large snags sticking out of the water.

Having stopped, we threw our baits with spinning rods - small spinners. My delight knew no bounds. At almost every parking lot we came across one, or even a couple of chubs, different sizes. The pleasure of fighting such a strong fish is indescribable. Since then, from that very fishing trip, I have become an avid lover of chub fishing.

Where to catch chub

I continue to catch the chub, mainly on the Don. But, I have no doubt that my methods of searching for chub sites are universal and suitable for any body of water. Of course, I already have a lot of explored and verified chub habitats. But, I'm still interested in finding new places to catch this predator.

Once upon a time, I began the search for a promising place by “tapping” the bottom, studying the underwater terrain in search of brows and falls. Now I begin my search with a careful examination of the area, studying the coastal relief. Do not forget that the relief of the bottom of the reservoir is a logical continuation and display of the relief of the surrounding area. Suppose a reservoir in some place has a steep coast, and so most often the bottom relief near such a place also has a slope in depth, smooth or stepped. And vice versa, the continuation of the gently sloping coast is most often shoals or a smooth slope.

I noticed that the chub spends most of its time in places with a depth of 2 - 3 meters, more often in close proximity to some large snag or to a blockage of small snags and sunken branches. Such places become a shelter both for small fish and for a large predator, which is always ready to dine on this trifle. Over time, these snags are abundantly overgrown with filamentous algae, which the chub also introduces into its diet with great pleasure. This fish, in general, has a special predilection for filamentous algae, if you manage to find a place where these underwater green braids stretch out and flow to the beat of the current, you can be sure that the chub is somewhere nearby.

Several times a day, the chub can also go to smaller places with a decent current. But these exits are not regular and often short in time.

There are two more, probably the most reliable signs of a promising place for chub fishing - this is a decent current and abundant coastal vegetation. The chub simply loves to hunt in those places where the crowns of trees are bent right above the water, and especially if there is a movement of water in such a place - a direct or reverse flow. Firstly, the shade from the trees is an excellent hiding place for a predator, but the main thing is any small living creatures that periodically fall into the water from the branches of a tree. The chub waits for these insects in such places. The most promising places happen at the outer bends of the river, where the current, hitting the shore, twists into whirlpools, tearing holes in the bottom. The coast in such a place, constantly washed away by the current, collapses, and the coastal trees become closer and closer to the water.

Tactics for catching chub

Over the years of hunting chub, I have developed my own fishing tactics. I use this tactic both in places I already know, and in unfamiliar places I visit for the first time. I start any fishing trip with a walk around and inspect the area and the reservoir. Moreover, I start my detour upstream from the intended place of fishing, and go downstream, following the current. During the walk, I choose the most promising places for the presence of the chub, using the signs that I spoke about above. Having designated for myself a couple of promising places, as well as the expected boundaries of the presence of a chub in each place, I proceed directly to fishing.

There are legends about the special caution and incredible shyness of the chub, and this is true, it has been verified repeatedly. If the chub somehow detects your presence - you can not try to catch it in this place, at least for an hour. The chub has one more feature - it almost always stands in a stream of water head first, against the current. This feature is used by experienced anglers, sneaking up quietly and imperceptibly to the place of the alleged parking of the chub against the current. So the chub is less likely to notice the angler. Having approached the place of fishing, I begin to catch it from afar, starting from the marked border closest to me and moving on to longer casts. I most often carry out the wiring of the bait with the flow, the chub is used to the fact that the current brings him food.

Catching a chub from a visible snag

Sometimes it is not difficult to determine a promising place for catching chub. This happens especially often in those places where the accumulation of snags and branches is noticeable, they come to the surface of the water. Having repeatedly caught such places, I have the opinion that chubs have a certain hierarchy when choosing habitats. The smallest specimens get the upper layers of the snag, and medium and large specimens are located in the middle and bottom layers of the water, respectively. Moreover, the largest chubs move freely throughout the snag area and in any layers of water, apparently at their own discretion.

Such places I catch on a fan pattern. I begin to “probe” the borders of the selected zone closest to me from afar. Moreover, I make the first throw of the bait closer to the shore. All subsequent throws follow with a certain step, moving away from the coast. Having “probed” in this way the near border of the promising zone, I begin to make long-range casts, sending the bait as close as possible to the snag. The first casts are again closer to the shore, and then, as if opening a fan, away from the shore. The best bait for long-range, and most importantly, well-aimed casts, I recognized a small spinner with a fairly heavy core. Casting the bait, moving against the current, I gradually approach the snag. Having caught up with the snag, I begin to catch the area upstream of it, using the same fan method, with a similar method of casting.

After reviewing my description of fishing tactics, I realized that it turned out to be too cumbersome and difficult to understand. Therefore, I make a drawing-scheme of the order of casting the bait.

LAYER CASTING SCHEME

When fishing for a promising place, it must be remembered that the chub can hunt not only near the surface of the water, but also in the lower horizons. Therefore, I try to hold baits in different levels of the reservoir. To do this, it is very convenient to use wobblers with varying degrees of penetration. As for the model, I chose cranks and sheds for myself. For fishing in the upper layers, I take cranks marked SR (shallow water models with a depth of no more than 1m) or SSR (these are super shallow water models with a depth of no more than 20cm). For fishing in the middle and lower layers of the reservoir, I use wobblers marked MDR (models for an average depth of about 1-2m) and DR (deep-sea wobblers with a depth of 2 to 6m). If the depth of the reservoir at the place of fishing does not exceed 2.5 m, then only shallow-water models - SR and models for the middle layer - MDR are sufficient.

When catching a chub in different horizons of a reservoir, the following observation may be useful to you - it has been noticed that in our area, namely on the Don, in a strong wind the chub descends into the lower layers of the water and hunts excellently there. On small rivers, such a dependence on the wind is not found.

Catching a chub at the bottom snag

I have described to you in detail the tactics of catching chub in places where the snag is visible, its individual parts are visible above the surface of the water. But perhaps the most fishing spots- these are deeper, where the snag lies at the bottom and is not visible from the shore. Finding such a place is more difficult. Well, if in sunny and calm weather, when there are no ripples on the surface of the water, you will be able to notice the bottom snag. Let the water above the snags be no more than a meter - this is quite enough. I catch such places in the same fan way, which I wrote about above. I always cast the bait upstream and lead with the current. Sometimes I still use the wiring of the bait against the current. I do it in the following way - I throw the bait perpendicular to the shore, let the current carry the bait a little down and start a very slow retrieval, all the time "cooperating" with the current. As for baits for fishing above the bottom snag, I recognized the best: wobblers "beetles" - for wiring with the flow and large surface cranks of the SSR type - for wiring across and against the current.

Chub fishing on "clean" water

A certain attachment of the chub to snarled places is well known, but this does not mean that in areas with a flat bottom and open water the chub does not appear at all. Of course, such places cannot be called promising, but they are worthy of your attention, it never hurts to check them out. And, especially, if branches of coastal trees or large bushes hang over such a place.

I catch such places in the same fan way - I make all the casts upstream, starting with near and ending with distant casts. I float the bait with the flow. Since the bottom in places with open water is most often flat and not replete with underwater snags, it becomes possible, in addition to surface wiring, to carry out the bait at the very bottom. During such a "near-bottom" posting, I often allow the bait to touch the bottom - such touches raise a small cloud of turbidity, which additionally attracts the attention of the chub. For fishing in open areas, when catching the bottom and middle layers of water, I usually use spinners and cranks or sheds marked MDR and DR.

What to catch chub

Finally, I would like to list those baits that have become for me the most catchy for catching chub in our region. These are the baits that have been shown for more than one season excellent results. Basically, for catching chub, I use wobblers - cranks, and sometimes for fishing in the middle horizons of a reservoir - sheds. For fishing in the bottom layers, in addition to wobblers, I often use. But now I want to talk only about wobblers.

WOBLERS FOR CATCHING CHUB:

1. Wobblers for fishing from the surface

Probably the most catchy bait in this category, I would call the Lucky Craft Gengoal 35 beetle - it does its job perfectly, rafting, passing over driftwood. For surface fishing, but only against the current, I use Tackle House Elfin Large Cicada and Jackall Cherry 1 Footer 46.

2. Wobblers with a small depth

From this group of lures, I most often use the following models - Yo-Zuri L-Minnow 44, Megabass Baby Griffon, IMA imatetra di. These cranks are distinguished by the fact that they show a wonderful game both when drawing with the current and against the current. These models are indispensable for reconnaissance of new, still unknown places of fishing.

3. Wobblers with medium depth

For catching chub in the middle layers of the reservoir, I usually use two types of wobblers - cranks and sheds. Of the cranks, two models performed best - the Lucky Craft Bevy Crank 45SR and the IMA imatetra tri. I recognized these three models as the best of the sheds - Lucky Craft Pointer 48DD, Yo-Zuri Arms Shad SP Micro, Pontoon 21 Greedy-Guts 55F-MDR, by the way, these models, in addition to chub, perfectly catch perch. best game they show with uniform wiring.

4. Deep wobblers

Of the many deep wobblers for catching chub at the very bottom, I chose two, in my opinion, the most suitable models- they handle the flow very well. These two of my favorites are the Lucky Craft Clutch DR and the Zip Baits B-Switcher 4.0 Rattler.

5. Wobblers "non-hooking"

Another interesting group of baits that I use for catching chub are wobblers - “non-hooking”. Usually I use surface wobblers, which are sold already in the format of non-hooks, i.e. instead of tee hooks, they are equipped with double hooks, which are installed with the tip up. These two proven models are Lucky Craft Gengoal 35 and Smith Camion Magnum SR.But, in my opinion, it costs nothing to convert any suitable surface wobbler into a non-hook. It is enough to simply replace the tees with double hooks, and the lower hook can be omitted altogether..

6. Spinners

In addition to the above lures - wobblers, I still often use a couple of models of spinners - Smith Niakis and Myran Mira. Spinners are great for long distance casting. They fly very accurately to the target. Their petals are easily "started" to play even during free soaring in the water, even before the start of the posting or during a pause. It is not uncommon for a chub to grab a lure precisely at a pause.

It is a large freshwater fish of the dace genus of the carp family. Under comfortable conditions, the fish can reach a length of 80 cm and a weight of 8 kg. Fishermen have to catch individuals up to 2-3 kg. In different regions, chub can also be called smut, maple, chub.

Fish features:

  • likes small rivers with a moderate current
  • very often it can be observed at the surface of the water
  • very shy
  • likes slow moving artificial lures

Biting calendar

  • In winter, the chub feeds little, you can catch it only on the first and last ice.
  • After the ice drift, the fish becomes more active, the bite increases as the water warms up.
  • Zhor chub observed before spawning.
  • During the summer, the chub pecks best during the flight of insects.
  • In autumn, the fish is naughty, it is most often possible to catch it from the bottom.

habitats

The main habitats of the chub are rivers with relatively clean water. The fish prefers small rivers with an abundance of vegetation or rich ichthyofauna.

  • In winter, fish settle in wintering pits, huddling in large flocks.
  • In spring, before spawning, chubs rush to the upper reaches of the rivers, entering small streams.
  • In summer, they occupy sections of rivers with whirlpools, on the border of currents, near algae thickets.

Chub food

The chub is an omnivorous fish. It can feed on green algae, plant seeds, grains, berries and fruits. But the main food of fish is insect larvae, leeches, worms, lamprey larvae, frogs. Adults actively hunt for juvenile fish. In winter, the chub feeds on benthic organisms, being active only at the beginning and end of winter.

Chub spawning

The chub is ready for breeding at 2-3 years of age. When the water temperature reaches 12-17ºС, the mating season begins for the fish. In the middle lane, this time falls on April-May. Fish spawn in flocks, mating games last several hours. The spawning grounds of the chub are in flooded places, in bays, oxbow lakes. The depth does not exceed 2-2.5 m. After spawning, the fish gets sick for a week, after which it begins to feed.

Finding a place to fish

Often the chub can be detected visually when the fish rises to the surface and walks in small groups. Favorite places for fish stopovers are fallen trees, boulders, snags, channel edges, entrances and exits from pits. Steep banks with swallow burrows become attractive areas of rivers for maple. In winter, you should look for chub in deep channels and pits.

What bait does it react to?

Chub fishing begins immediately after the ice drift. In early spring, the fish react to animal baits such as worms and bloodworms, and when the first insects appear, you should switch to surface fishing. Fishing with the cockchafer is especially interesting and lucrative. But the fish does not refuse steamed peas, river lamprey, as well as small wobblers and turntables. In autumn, it prefers such animal attachments as creeps, frogs, mollusk meat, small live bait. In winter, fishing is carried out on bloodworms.

Lure

When catching chub on peas, maggots, pearl barley, worms, bait should be used. Since it is quite difficult to overfeed the fish in the river, the bait mixture should contain large fractions, especially of the nozzle on which the fishing is carried out. Effective baiting of fish with pea grains, in a caught fish, the mouth and stomach are completely clogged with pea substance.

Fishing methods

Float tackle in the wiring. Use a light float and rig. The chub is very shy and large splashes from your heavy bobber will frighten it. And light tackle will easily go with the flow and eventually find its bite.

A handsome man, a fighter, a masterpiece of nature - these epithets are often awarded to a chub, a fish named so for its large head. This omnivorous representative of the carp family coveted trophy for any angler, because catching and playing a large chub always adds a fair amount of adrenaline to the blood. In this review, we will tell you how to catch chub at different times of the season. open water: from April to October, we will also mention winter fishing on the river beauty. We will describe his favorite habitats and fishing methods, tell you about nozzles and baits, on which he bites better.

Behavioral features

A handsome silver man with a squared strong body prefers to stay in the current, therefore he belongs to typical river inhabitants, sometimes he enters flowing lakes, but this is a rarity. But river rifts, turns with a fast current are his element.

Moreover, it is found in large and small rivers, as well as in very small streams.

In reservoirs, the chub prefers to stay close to the flowing rivers and streams.

In rivers, the chub loves to stay near the banks with overhanging bushes or trees, under which he collects fallen insects, such as dragonflies or the same cherry berries. Also, the favorite habitats of the handsome silver are rapids and rifts, steep banks. He does not like to stand on a muddy bottom, in places with dying algae.

The large mouth of this fish speaks of its predatory preferences, although in fact the chub can be called a semi-predatory fish, because in addition to small fish, insects are present in its diet: dragonflies, grasshoppers, as well as worms, crayfish and plant foods. Many have probably heard that in the summer chub fishing for grasshoppers, cherries or corn can be very successful.

In addition, starting from June, the chub feeds on mud and algae, which are overgrown with underwater snags, and strong pharyngeal teeth allow it to grind the shells of crayfish or snail shells. Therefore, catching a chub for cancer also often brings success.

Closer to autumn, the chub switches to enhanced nutrition, the main dish in its diet is the fry of narrow-bodied fish: upper or gudgeon. And with the onset winter season it slides into pits and hardly feeds, becoming active only on the last ice. However, there are rivers in which even in winter you can successfully catch chub and ice fishing.

The spawning of the chub coincides in time with the flowering of the bird cherry, and it begins in April or May, depending on the region of the country. A feature of the chub spawner is that, unlike most fish, it does not stop eating. Therefore spawning of a chub is not an obstacle for its biting. But anyway, the chub zhor comes, like in other species, fish a week after spawning, in May-June.

It is necessary to say about one more feature of catching chub.

This fish is very cautious, it can notice a person on the shore from a great distance and hide in a secluded place in its river, so you need to carefully disguise yourself.

For example, in sunny weather, you can not approach the place where you will catch the chub, so that a shadow falls on the water.

What to catch?

The omnivorousness of our handsome man was noted by Sabaneev's contemporaries, so when choosing what to catch a chub with, on the one hand, you will have to break your head, on the other hand, you can catch it for whatever you want. We list all the possible options for lures that are equipped with hooks for chub fishing.

  • crayfish and crayfish meat;
  • frogs;
  • fry of carp fish;
  • worms: dung, earth and creeps;
  • insects: dragonflies, grasshoppers, locusts, May and Colorado beetles;
  • flies;
  • butterflies;
  • leeches;
  • shellfish;
  • maggots;
  • salo;
  • sausages;
  • cow or pork liver, and the chub liver likes both raw and boiled;
  • chicken intestines;
  • fish cutting;
  • fish eye.

  • corn;
  • bread: especially drifted bread crusts;
  • dough;
  • berries of cherry, currant or gooseberry;
  • processed cheese;
  • steamed grain;
  • peas;
  • boiled potatoes.

In addition to natural baits used when chub is being caught on a feeder or float rod, a handsome strong man is caught on artificial fly fishing or spinning lures.

What to catch?

The baits described in the previous part largely determine the way chub is caught. In addition, the choice of equipment is determined by the personal preferences of the angler, as well as the intended places on small or large rivers where fishing will take place.

Tackle for catching chub is very diverse, here are their main types:

  1. Float wire rod.
  2. Padding with a bale.
  3. Poludonka.
  4. Living rod.
  5. Winter fishing rod.
  6. Spinning.
  7. Fly fishing tackle.

Catching a wire

For the chub, lure fishing is one of the most popular methods of catching this beautiful fish. The equipment contains Bolognese float rod, a conductor coil and a loaded float, fused with the flow.

Worms, maggots, corn, bread, liver or other bait or nozzle are put on the hook of such tackle. Here the principle of seasonality of fishing is observed.

Catching a chub in the spring is lucky for a worm or cutting fish, liver or fry. Starting from May, when the mass flight of insects begins, fish are caught on the May or Colorado potato beetle, after removing hard elytra, and other insects.

Chub fishing in the summer allows you to use a crust of bread, corn, cherries, melted cheese on the hook.

Catching a chub in October before freezing on a wire rod is more successful if the hook is equipped with a worm or bloodworm.

The technique of catching the wire varies. You can fish with the tackle passing by the angler or by letting the tackle go with the flow, in this case we recommend using chub bait.

feeder tackle

Catching a chub on a feeder is used on medium and large rivers when long-distance casting and bait of a fishing spot are required. Bait for chub is used the same as for any other carp fish. It is imperative to include in its composition what will be put on the hook: bread, corn, crushed cherries, and so on.

Catching a chub in the spring, especially early, or late autumn it is carried out with bait with simple soil with the addition of an animal component, which will better collect fish that eat off by winter.

Bunting with a bale

An interesting way of catching a chub is the constriction with a baler. The secret of this gear is simple. Two anglers on opposite banks of the river are tying up reeled rods. Long leashes with hooks are tied to the main line. Insects are planted on hooks. This tackle is especially successful in catching insects in May or June during the summer. This method is also used at a later time. Even in early autumn, the fish bite on the draw and you can catch a good specimen of not only chub, but also asp.

The fishing technique is quite interesting, here are its main secrets:

  1. Two fishermen take up positions on opposite banks of a catchy chub spot on the river.
  2. The fishermen lift their rods up and stretch the line.
  3. Slowly lowering the rods down, they try to touch the surface of the water with hooks with baited insects.
  4. The fish, noticing splashing insects, actively peck.
  5. One of the anglers, noticing a bite, makes a cut.
  6. The second fisherman releases the reel brake, and his partner at this time plays the fish.

Poludonka

Features of catching a chub on a half-bottom is that this fishing takes place on the go with a strong current. Although the tackle is float, the float is not in the water, but is tied just below the tip of the rod. The secret is that in a rough current a simple float cannot be kept in place, and feeder tackle does not give sensitivity under such conditions.

You can place several such donoks along the shore in the likely habitats of fish, maximum four, otherwise you won’t be able to keep track of everyone. Hooks are equipped with a worm or maggot. Half-bottom fishing is best in early spring, in late April - early May, when the banks of the rivers are not yet overgrown with tall grass and are clearly visible from afar.

Live bait

The chub also bites perfectly on live bait, and already in early May, after spawning, it can be caught on minnows or heads. And from the end of May, when the frogs hatch from the tadpoles, the chub bites well on the frog.

For this fishing, live bait tackle is used. According to the installation of the equipment, the live bait fishing rod resembles the Bologna one, only the float is set so that it can keep the live bait afloat, and the sinker is sliding so that the predatory fish does not feel excessive resistance.

There are no special secrets in the technique of catching chub on live bait. We bait the fish and send it along the river, trying to “walk” it along the previously designated places. Just be careful, other species can covet such a treat. predatory fish: perch, and toothy pike can not only peck, but also cut off your equipment.

AND spring fishing, and fishing in the summer are successful on live bait. But the chub bites especially well on live bait in November, before freezing.

Winter fishing

Winter chub fishing is rarely directed at this particular predator, it is mainly caught as by-catch on roach or perch. But his winter bite is also amazing: a strong jerk and powerful resistance.

Spinning

Spin fishing for chub is possible at any time of the open water season. But if spring and autumn fishing is mainly on spinners and minnow wobblers, then in July and August the chub prefers more voluminous surface baits.

fly fishing

We can talk endlessly about fly fishing for chub, but we can briefly dwell on this principle. What kind of insects over the river are more numerous at certain times of the year, such an imitation fly should be hooked on a leash.

Some professional fishermen who know where and how to catch a chub call it shy and capricious prey, and those who hunt this handsome man are considered almost altruists. But it is not so. Fishing for chub is not as difficult as it seems at first. At least it is no more difficult than for another river predator, and in some cases even easier.

general information

This fish prefers non-navigable small rivers, avoiding standing water, algae and muddy bottoms. In a fast-flowing river, the chub cannot stay on the rapid for a long time, therefore it seeks shelter for itself in the form of boulders, etc., keeps the border between the current and the calm. As a rule, flocks of this fish are small, while larger ones are single. The chub feeds around the clock, it is omnivorous, but likes to diversify its food. This habit usually coincides with the beginning of the bathing season and lasts until mid-autumn.

Experienced anglers who know how to catch a chub catch it not only on a worm, small frog, fish and various larvae, but also on insects, shells and greens. Its pharyngeal teeth are so powerful that they are quite capable of crushing them, and its large mouth easily grasps fairly large objects.

For the angler, large chubs are very tempting prey. Such specimens are very cautious, and when caught, they bravely resist, forcing a person to show all their skills. Those who know well how to catch a chub will say that it has very characteristic bites. At night, they are so sharp that anglers do not always have time to respond with hooking. Even small individuals weighing up to five hundred grams peck very sharply during the day.

Features of spring fishing

Chub fishing begins in early March, with complete water clearing. At this time, those who know how to catch a chub with a bait rush to the banks of fast rivers in the hope of a good catch. best time For spring fishing noon or afternoon is considered. Float and bottom fishing rods are considered the best tackle this season, although those who have already got their hands on it and know well how to catch chub in the spring also use worm wiring, and better in a bunch. Creeps, bark beetles and larvae of the May beetle, which this predator swallows with no less pleasure, have also proven themselves well.

The main thing in this case is the long casting of the donkey - twenty to thirty meters, and a long swim of the bait, which should be at half water or at the bottom.

The daily bite of large individuals is very interesting. At first, the fishing line shudders several times, smoothly stretches and suddenly weakens. This moment must not be missed - you need to instantly hook it. However, experienced fishermen know that during the day the chub is rarely caught, but at night it happens that it manages to pluck poorly fixed rods from the shore.

When fishing for insects along the top, the bite is a sharp immersion of the bait into a funnel that appears on the water. After that, the fishing line begins to move, going under the water. Since the end of May, the chub is especially well caught on insects along the top and with a long cast. In the spring, when the May beetle appears, the most catchy period begins.

Chub in summer

By the beginning of June, when hordes of insects begin to fly in the air, and in many rivers the water is already noticeably clear after the spring flood, this fish often appears in the upper layers, hunting for fallen insects. But real summer fishing on this inhabitant of the rivers does not begin with the calendar summer, but a little later. This is due to grasshoppers, which are beautiful, perhaps the most best bait for the chub. They reach their normal size only by mid-June. Therefore, for those who are interested in what is better to catch a chub, you need to know: a grasshopper is bait No. 1. Its main advantage is that this insect is a very tasty food for fish, it perfectly holds on the hook. In addition, the grasshopper chub is perfectly caught on long casts.

Continues summer fishing almost all three months without a break. But even knowing how to catch chub in the summer, you can return home empty-handed. This is explained by the fact that, although this predator during this period is less capricious in biting than other species, it still has a time when it does not bite well. These are the intense heat in July, the massive flight of the broom (shore mayfly) and the appearance of a large number of night butterflies. All these circumstances lead to the fact that in the middle of summer the chub begins to feed at night, and when it is full, it practically ceases to be interested in bait during the day. The most successful fishing for this fish is in June and August, when the heat subsides and the army of insects decreases.

During the hot months this freshwater fish, which is part of the carp family, often keeps under trees hanging over the water, where it looks forward to insects falling from their leaves. It is also found in the area of bridges, dams or piles. The largest specimens stay in the water column, while the fines can be easily seen on the surface.

It is difficult to say how to catch a chub (by spinning or fly fishing) is better. The answer depends on the preferences of anglers. The main spinning baits are wobblers for chub with an active game and shallow depth when immersed. Fly fishing involves various flies, both sinking and floating. The most important thing with this tackle is to choose the right fly that will imitate the object of hunting a chub.

When catching rifts, the following scheme of how to catch a chub on spinning is best suited:

  • the first of the casts is done not far, but always perpendicular to the flow;
  • the second - the same, but a little further;
  • the third - as far as possible and perpendicular to the flow of water.

Accordingly, the same should be done in all sectors. Thus, the angler catches the entire roll at about ninety degrees.

When fishing, special attention should be paid to the border between fast and slow currents. Knowing where to catch a chub, you can always count on a bite. There is another sign by which the location of this fish is absolutely determined: water silk. Since the chub feeds on it, it is quite natural that whole flocks can be found in such places.

Of course, a completely logical question arises: "Why are wobblers for chub or turntables so catchy at a time when this fish is actively feeding on water silk?" According to experts, the fact is that this representative of carps often does not try to eat these baits, but drives away his competitors, who, in his opinion, encroach on his water silk. Apparently, it is the latter that is the reason that fish meat in the summer slightly gives off mud.

Tackle selection

In order for chub fishing with spinning to be the most successful, it is necessary to choose the right tackle. The action of the rod is medium in order to allow you to cast far lighter baits. With the help of fast spinning, this is unlikely to succeed. Super-fast rods are not suitable either. The chub is considered a fairly strong fish, but the average power for it will be quite enough.

The coil also needs to be selected not very large. The best option are models with a smooth ride, which are designed to work with thin fishing line or braided cord. What exactly to choose? This is a personal preference for every angler. But many wind a braided cord on the reel, which can withstand a maximum load of up to eight kilograms and has a thickness of 0.08 to 0.1 mm.

The main thing in gear

But there is another factor that is very important for good luck. These are the right baits. Experienced hunters recommend using wobblers for chub, spinners. Not bad "work" and microjig, and small oscillators.

Specifically for the chub, wobblers can be taken in different sizes and types. Although many are accustomed to using small baits designed for a depth of no more than one and a half meters. In this case, the recommended length of the nozzle is four centimeters maximum. Although there are no special requirements for coloring, but professionals say that the chub prefers natural shades that resemble fry, for example, dark matte.

Spin fishing types

It can be of three types and depends on the method and place of fishing:

  • alloy;
  • from the shore (undercarriage);
  • on the transitions.

Many anglers say that in hot weather catching chub on the shallows is a real pleasure. It is very pleasant, having removed the waders, to stomp on the water with a spinning rod. Although those who are counting on a decent catch have to put in a lot of effort for this.

Alloy fishing involves drifting with the current on a boat with the bait tossed into places where, according to the assumption, a chub can be found - in bushes, snags of trees, mini-backwaters, etc. In such cases, bites occur mainly on a splash, after the bait splash down. However, this method is not possible on rivers with strong currents.

Fishing from the shore or running, as it is commonly called, is one of the most popular methods. The most important thing in it for the fisherman is to remain unnoticed, also accurately throw the bait in the desired place. The advantage of this type of fishing is the possibility of using various baits. If the river is not very wide, then with the help of light wobblers, you can even cast to the other side, while counting on a good catch.

Bait selection

When choosing between deep and floating wobblers, many prefer the latter. Such a bait works both for a splash and for wiring. And if you have to throw a spinning rod under distant snags, then there is nothing better than a sinking nozzle.

Spinner and microjig

On the rifts, the turntable is especially relevant. In general, a spinner is considered a classic bait for chub. Its use is most justified in May or early June.

As soon as the rivers return to their channels, the chub begins to stick to the bottom layer. And only in the summer it begins to rise to the surface of the water. Therefore, early springtime makes anglers use microjigs, which at this time is the most convenient and catchy. The color of this bait can be very different: from black or light green to yellow with a dark sheen. At the same time, its mass is selected depending on the depth of fishing and the speed of the current. But there is one nuance for which the hunter must be prepared. In addition to the chub, pike or perch very often bite on such a spinning bait.

Leash

It is more correct when catching a chub to fasten the bait directly or through microscopic fasteners. There may or may not be a lead. If, however, it is calculated between times to hunt for pike, then it is better to use it after all. For this, however, a smaller leash is selected, and from a string, and not from fluorocarbon.

Bait for chub

In this type of fishing, bait is used extremely rarely. But if there is a risk of being left without a catch at all, then this maneuver should not be neglected. It is necessary to attach a chub, that is, to force him to regularly visit a given place. For complementary foods, it is better to use bread, steamed grains mixed with butter or odorous flavors. A crumb of linen pomace, berries, in particular raspberries, are perfect.

Bait, which is already used during fishing, should consist of light small particles that attract this fish. When the opportunity arises, those who love chub fishing stock up on ant eggs, bran and cake.

Active fishing for chub in the spring can begin already with the first warm days in early March. This is a rather interesting, very cautious and strong opponent, whose habits have not yet been fully studied by the fishing community.

It is mainly distributed in large and small rivers of the middle zone of our country, where you can find very worthy specimens. The average weight of the lobas 800 - 900 gr, but cases of capture of representatives of this species up to 5 kg are known. They catch him various types tackle, using both artificial and natural baits.

Habitats and behavioral patterns

Among other things, spring chub fishing is interesting because many anglers open their spring-summer fishing season. Chub fishing in early spring usually begins after one to two weeks after ice cover disappears from the rivers. At this time, the large-headed predator leaves the wintering pits and begins to actively feed before the spawning period.

Starting from the moment when the chub begins to peck in the spring and until the start of spawning, its activity gradually, along with the warming of the water, increases and reaches its climax in the second half of April, early May. However, in the rivers of the southern part of the country, chub is also actively fished in March, the last week of this first month of spring.

In those places, due to the rapid increase in air and water temperatures, the chub begins an active weight gain somewhat earlier in early spring. Therefore, it is necessary to determine when to catch a chub in the spring not according to the calendar, but according to how quickly the river is freed from ice and the water warms up.

It is well known that in March, immediately after leaving the pits, the chub begins to gather in flocks, after which it gradually moves to the spawning grounds. And these are, most often, small tributaries of rivers with a calm current, well warmed by the spring sun, or shallow bays. It is to them that the chub usually strives in the spring.

Depending on where this place is located, the flock can sometimes get there for quite a long time. Flocks spawn at different times, depending on the location and water temperature. But the spawning of the lobast itself occurs very quickly, only one day is enough for it.

The spring chub, during its movement to spawning grounds, can appear and attack the bait literally anywhere in the river, even in the backwater with coastal mud, where at other times it can hardly be found. But still, the most promising places to look for it are:

  1. Sections of rivers with rapids. In such places, the chub for spinning in the spring goes very well.
  2. Areas of a reservoir bordering on bottom pits. Here, productive fishing for chub in the spring is possible with almost all types of baits.
  3. Places where there are several flooded large boulders.
  4. IN narrowing of the riverbed even if the bottom is not rocky. Here, catching chub on spinning in the spring can be quite effective until the end of May.
  5. Sections of the river under overhanging trees where the chub feeds on larvae of various insects in spring and at other times of the year. You can determine that it is here by frequent splashes on the surface of the water.
  6. On the border of areas with different flow intensities.

It can also be found at the flooded snag, next to the bridge supports, in the area of small islands. Most likely, catching a chub on a spinning rod in March, after the ice has completely melted, will be successful at the exit from the pits, before the riffles.

Chub fishing in April is quite active and can be successful in a variety of places. But still, after some warming up of the water, first of all you need to look for it at the confluence of various tributaries with the main channel(Eriks, streams, etc.), not far from the coast, where it is now easiest for him to find the right food.

In such places, the average chub usually goes very well for spinning in April and early May. At the same time, there is no need for long-distance casting of lures, their wiring will be much more effective parallel to the coast at a distance of 2-3 meters from it.

Chub fishing in May will be more productive near pits and steep banks. Here, the Lobast usually rests for some time after spawning. After that, in the second half of the month, he begins to actively hunt throughout the water area, searching for food in various places. Therefore, fishing for chub in May should begin with the identification of such promising places.

Basic fishing methods

You can successfully catch this fish different ways. Each angler usually chooses what and how to catch chub in the spring, taking into account their skills, favorite gear and baits. The following methods are considered the most common and effective:

  1. Spin fishing.
  2. Donkey fishing.
  3. Fly fishing.

Catching on float tackle not suitable for spring conditions.

For spinning

If you prefer the first option, then it would be useful to know that fishing for chub on spinning in early spring should be carried out only in daytime, since it is active almost around the clock during this period.

Attention! In the first weeks of spring, the chub is weakened after wintering, so when catching it, you should not use jerky or fast wiring. The bait should be carried evenly, at a medium or slow pace.

To hunt him, you need to pick up a light one or even, since baits for a chub in the spring for spinning should not be large. Most likely, he will be interested in small, but noticeable options for baits, such as turntables no higher than the second number, surface wobblers up to 3 cm, etc. At the same time, you need to know that the chub in March for spinning, immediately after the ice melts willingly, as in the following months.

Chub fishing on spinning becomes much more active in April, it is no longer so picky in the choice of lures and can attack both the lightest and medium baits.

But the chub is especially often caught on spinning in May, after spawning. At this time, he tries with renewed vigor to replenish his energy reserves and attacks any bait that is more or less attractive to him, located in his zone of sensitivity. And this usually continues until the onset of the summer heat.

What can you catch a chub in the spring with the help of spinning? Can be catchy enough almost all types of baits except perhaps the jig. At the same time, to increase efficiency, catching chub on wobblers in the spring can alternate with catching, for example, on different types spinners. So the spinner will quickly draw attention to his gear and succeed.

Among wobblers, you need to choose models that maximally resemble small roach, ruff or minnow, equipped with one or two tees. Their color should be as natural as possible, without bright elements, as they can frighten off the spring, extremely cautious chub.

On the donkey

There is a certain time when the chub pecks in the spring on bottom tackle. This period begins in March, with its spring activation, and, as a rule, continues until spawning. After spawning, it is very difficult to catch him on this type of tackle.

One of the advantages of this method of catching Lobast over others is that it can be caught with a donk and during the day and at night. For night fishing you need to install the appropriate .

In addition, given that at this time the water in the rivers is usually very muddy, it can be equipped with a rather thick fishing line, which at other times can scare it away. But it is worth remembering that a fishing line with a large cross section is more likely to be carried by the current, so determine for yourself the most acceptable option that combines thickness and strength.

Experienced anglers will always tell you what the chub pecks at in the spring from the bottom of this reservoir. Commonly recognized baits that have proven their catchability are:

  • large worms;
  • bunches of maggot;
  • large insect larvae, for example, it goes very well on cockchafer larvae.

It is known that this fish is practically omnivorous, the lobate eats both plant and animal food with pleasure, so it is usually not a problem at all what to catch a chub in March, April or May.

But for sure, not everyone knows that chub fishing in the spring is very productive. chicken liver. Moreover, such bait works best in early spring, when there are not so many insects and their larvae yet, and the appetite of the fish is growing rapidly. Therefore, catching chub on the liver is most successful in the spring, usually from March to the end of April.

Important! The liver must be fresh, in extreme cases, fresh-frozen, saturated with a sufficient amount of blood. Boiled or scalded with boiling water, she loses her attractiveness for him.

At the same time, based on the practice of many fishermen, the use of a liver of a different origin to catch a lobe is ineffective.

fly fishing

In our country, fly fishing gear began to be mastered relatively recently. In terms of its popularity, it is still very far from the usual spinning, float rod or donks, but it should be noted that fly fishing for chub in the spring is very effective. This is perhaps the most sports way catching a large-fronted predator, which requires the angler to know his habits and precise movements. The flies used for chub in the spring should be appropriate for the fishing period.

So, from the beginning of March to mid-April, it is recommended to use weighted, sinking flies wet type. Especially catchy options are considered flies imitating the larvae of a caddisfly or amphipod and the so-called "nymphs"(often Czech or Polish made).

After the mass flight Cialis Lutaria(Common Loopfly), the chub rises to the surface of the water and can often be seen jumping out of the water near overhanging shrubs or trees. He begins to hunt insects and larvae. As a bait for a chub in the spring, during this period when fly fishing, brown or black flies resembling this insect are better than others.

At the end of April, beginning of May appears Chafer. The most effective fly-fishing for chub in May is carried out using flies that most realistically depict this insect, which is one of its favorite delicacies. By the end of spring, flies in the form of "bronze", an insect that the lobast rarely neglects.

The best time to catch chub fly fishing is considered to be early morning hours or time before sunset. Flying should be sharp, with their movement by 25 - 30 cm. When attacking a fish, the movement of the bait must be accelerated, otherwise the chub may feel deceit and retreat.

Useful video

Undoubtedly, catching a cautious chub in the spring is one of the most reckless and interesting views fishing. It allows the angler to show all his skill in preparing tackle, in the most accurate determination of what the chub pecks at in the spring on a given reservoir and, in fact, in catching it.
