CONTEXT

In 2007, when preparations for the Olympic Games in Sochi were just beginning, designing a palace for competitions in figure skating and the short track was entrusted, like many objects at that stage, to a foreign architectural bureau - namely the Italian Alessandro Zoppini (who later designed the arenas for winter competitions in South Korea in 2018 and in Poland in 2022). The arena, designed by the Milanese architect, turned out to be cold white, with alternating transparent and frosted glazing: as if someone had ridden a masterful crossroll across the snow-covered ice surface. In terms of shape, the volume of the structure resembled an iceberg, which is why it eventually got its name - with pronounced edges, although for the most part not sharp.

However, in 2009, the same thing happened with the palace as with the neighboring one: having come to the conclusion that it was easier to transfer the project to the Russian bureau than to try to bring the foreign concept in line with our standards, the organizers handed the baton of the general designer to Andrei Bokov and Mosproekt-4 .

Drawings for the object

ARCHITECTURE

The new authors of the project changed virtually everything - except, perhaps, the ice arena itself in the center, which still received an impressive size of 30 × 60 m. Thinking over the possible further use of the structure, the architects developed a collapsible structure: if desired, the palace can be disassembled clean and collect somewhere on the other side of the country. And get no longer a short track - but a cycle track. However, so far the Iceberg has not changed its location, retaining at the same time its icy essence: today a figure skating school operates here.

The change in the design also led to a change in the volumetric plasticity of the structure. If Zoppini's invisible waves splashed somewhere outside, turning selective edges, then in the final version the building itself turned into a wave, effectively “covering” the first floor.

The color scheme has also become more dynamic: Guardian stained glass of two types — SunGuard HP Royal Blue 38/31 sky color and transparent SunGuard HP Neutral 61/42 — broke the facades into a kind of “pixels”, enhancing the impression of movement. This is not even a wave, but a real tsunami: in total, there are 600 tons of double-glazed windows on the walls of the Iceberg!

Glass from the SunGuard High Performance series combines solar control and thermal insulation: in winter it helps to keep heat inside, and in summer it reflects outside, saving heating and air conditioning costs. Depending on the amount of sunlight, the degree of transparency of the glass also changes. And in combination with multi-layered profiles, which are painted in different shades of blue, each of the five floors received its own color, while the audience is an additional way of orienting in the space of the palace, which is now equally harmonious with the sea, sky and mountain peaks.

Castle winter sports"Iceberg"

Palace of winter sports "Iceberg" - one of objects of the 2014 Olympics. Located in the Olympic Park ("Coastal Cluster"), in the Imeretinskaya lowland of the Adler district of the city Sochi. It is planned to hold competitions in figure skating and short track in the Iceberg Sports Palace as part of XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014.

Structures

Ice Palace of Sports, designed for 12,000 seats. Located in the Olympic Park, Sochi, Adler district, Imeretinskaya lowland.

It includes an ice arena (60x30m) and a training rink for figure skating and short track competitions (60x30m), which is planned to be used during winter Olympic Games 2014.

Construction and use

Iceberg Winter Sports Palace was built by Engeokom. This is an object of a collapsible type with the possibility of dismantling and transferring for post-Olympic use as an Ice Palace of Sports in another city of the Russian Federation. The General Designer of the Sports Palace "Iceberg" for the Olympic Games 2014 - State Unitary Enterprise MNIIP "Mosproekt-4" - made a five-story building in a collapsible version. This made it possible to complete all construction work quickly (while maintaining quality), as well as to minimize the weight of structures, which is especially important for the complex nature of the Imeretinskaya lowland.

Final sports facility building area of 22050 m 2 and with a total area of 67800 m 2 was built in full compliance with the requirements of the International Olympic and Paralympic Committees, as well as International Union skaters. The facade of the building is one giant split system: low-emission glass retains heat in winter, and in summer does not allow the rays of the midday sun to penetrate into the premises.

The name of the Ice Palace - "Iceberg" - evokes associations with the architectural form of the object. It is international, it sounds the same in Russian, English and German.

At a meeting held in January 2011 and dedicated to the legacy of the Winter Olympic Games - 2014, Dmitry Medvedev said that after they were held, the Iceberg Ice Sports Palace would be redeveloped into a cycle track.

Iceberg Winter Sports Palace has been used since June 2012. Competitions were held in it:

  • "Federation Cup" in figure skating - October 6, 2012;
  • Final Grand Prix in figure skating season 2012-2013 - December 6-9, 2012;
  • Russian Short Track Championship - December 19-21, 2012;
  • Russian Figure Skating Championship 2013 - December 25-29, 2012

Where is the ice palace on the map of Adler?

It is located in the Olympic Park, which occupies the coastal half of the Imeretinskaya lowland of Adler (Sochi). Nearby, which has already become popular, the Training Arena is spread out and.

History and structure of the sports complex

Iceberg Winter Sports Palace was built in 2012 in the northern sector of the round Imereti cluster. A dozen construction and installation contracts worked on its creation. Many investors have invested here. Started using in October. The test competition was the next international tournament- Grand Prix of figure skaters in 2012. Before the competition, a loud opening of the DZS took place.

It is curious that initially they wanted to dismantle the structure and move it to another region, because there are more at Olympic Plaza. But they changed their mind. And for good reason - it looks amazing!

"Iceberg" occupies 68,000 sq. m, a Ice Arena inside it has a size of 60 by 30 m. It is designed for 12,000 seats around the perimeter, and there is also an impressive ice rink for training. The structure reaches a height of 28 m. The complex is equipped with the latest equipment to maintain the microclimate - both in the spectator stands and in the arena itself. Moreover, the unique design allows this palace to be repurposed for summer competitions.

Visits to the ice palace "Iceberg"

If you are a fan of winter sports games come to Sochi. The ice palace "Iceberg" "keeps" the winter even in the warm season. There are always matches or demonstration performances. He played a huge role in the 2014 Olympics. In terms of shape and color, the structure really resembles a huge block of ice plowing the sea - with the help of special facade tiles, it seems to shimmer from white to dark blue.

The stand, where the map of seats is displayed, is already in the lobby - on the first level of the building. The poster of the sports institution (sometimes it is under 9 m high) tells us what events are available for visiting here. They may be:

  • various shows, including "Dancing on Ice";
  • hockey competitions;
  • short track championships;
  • competitions in "long" speed skating;
  • concerts;
  • demonstration performances of figure skaters;
  • the entire "ice" part of any winter sports day;
  • and Christmas performances (adults and children) with the participation of actors on skates.

The foyer and various halls of the palace are also multifunctional. Suffice it to point out that in addition to the “main circle” with the stands of the fans, there is a zone for holding championships in short track and figure skating: the training rink was already tested in 2012, during the “launch” of this kind of stadium. He did not let the athletes down.

The space of the Iceberg arena can, like a transformer, turn into a concert hall, which is prepared even for a fireworks competition. The fire safety system has passed thousands of emergency tests. Well-known musical groups have already “dead down” here - “Scorpions” and “Hands Up”. The complex also acted as a stage for the performances of many popular theaters.

At your service is also a hall of modern layout - with a conveniently located bathroom, a buffet (a counter for the sale of dishes and products, a set of plastic furniture on the territory of the hall itself), and also a wardrobe. In a separate sector you will also find management offices. On each column hang constructions-announcements of upcoming events. Well, it remains to be added that the ticket offices of the ice palace are mostly open until 20:00.

How to get (get there)?

You need a stop "Bar Terrace". Only one bus goes here - 124С. However, you can go to this patch from the other side Olympic Park- from stops (minibuses 57K, 125C and 135) or "Big Palace" (still No. 100).

By car, you need to get here in this way:

The majestic complex can be appreciated with the help of our photos. In Adler, the Iceberg Ice Palace is known to everyone who lives in the Imeretinskaya lowland, that is, near. Its exterior, if only because of its size, is simply impossible to forget. This colossus is noticeable from afar - and from the side sea shore, and with residential complex "Mirny". Feedback from Russians who have been here makes us understand that this is a “convenient and large place”, as well as that “it is quite convenient for fans and organizers of the competition”. In conclusion, watch an informative video clip about him, enjoy watching.
