Nikolai Nikolaevich Gogol was born and lived for the first 16 years of his life in an amazing picturesque place - the Carpathians, in the west of Ukraine. The most interesting thing is that for these 16 years, being side by side with horses and helping his parents with the housework, Nikolai never once sat on horseback.
Apparently, the tired and unaesthetic appearance of rural horses did not attract the future lover of the English thoroughbred breed. Nikolai Nikolaevich's love for horses will flare up later. In the meantime, he takes on the realization of his first dream and in 1986, on a Komsomol ticket, he goes to the city of Nadym to earn money for his first car. In Western Siberia, Nikolai Nikolayevich will spend more than a decade and a half. There he will graduate in absentia from Omsk State University with a degree in Economics, and there his childhood dream will come true: he will become the head, organize a private enterprise, which will gradually grow into the largest group of companies in Siberia.
Nikolai Nikolaevich Gogol moved to Moscow not so long ago - in 2000, and here he realized his next dream - his own equestrian center. But how horses appeared in the life of an entrepreneur should be told separately.

The first time Nikolai Nikolayevich got on a horse in 1999 in Mexico, and horse riding immediately fascinated him. Since then, when traveling, he always found the opportunity to visit local equestrian clubs and ride horseback. Yes, and in Moscow, Saturday-Sunday were held at the nearest stable. Nikolai's wife, Natalya, although she herself did not sit in the saddle, supported her husband and always accompanied him on trips to the KSK. And in 2001, she gave her husband his first horse - the Trakehner black mare Baltic with a very wayward character. From that day on, active jumping lessons began. A year later, on his second horse, the Seimas, Nikolai Gogol won competitions with obstacles up to 120 cm high and received the second category. Now horses were not just a hobby, but important part life. Nikolai Nikolaevich began to get to know the equestrian world from the inside, and he wanted to involve his friends in it too: almost by force he dragged them to equestrian competitions.

Gradually, Nikolai Nikolayevich began to come to the idea of his own KSK. His idea of what an equestrian center should be like was formed - a family, cozy, kind of second home. Coming to Europe, he studied the structure of local stables, what kind of ground should be, how many training grounds, arenas, etc. In addition, according to Gogol's idea, the construction of the KSK was supposed to solve a practical issue: Nikolai Nikolayevich is a very hospitable person and likes to gather large groups of friends, but at home it is not always convenient (you must respect the interests of the household), but in the club it is appropriate. So you need a good restaurant. Both a children's room and playgrounds are a must - for your children and for the little guests of the club. This is how the future infrastructure of Otrada was formed.
From an idea, an equestrian center turned into a real goal. Many friends, not yet involved in the equestrian world, dissuaded Nikolai Nikolayevich from building a KSK. But, if Nikolai decided to bring something to life, it is already useless to stop him.
Gogol approached the construction of Otrada very consciously: he understood that it would not be easy and huge investments would be required. But the entrepreneur is used to achieving the goal. Nikolai Nikolaevich is fond of studying history and the role of great reformers in it, he loves Peter I and Stolypin very much. And as you can see from history, many things only seem justified after some time. So it happened with the "Otrada": as soon as the stalls were rebuilt, they immediately filled with horses. Friends who had recently discouraged construction soon became avid horsemen and regulars at Otrada themselves. Along with the construction of the complex, its atmosphere was also formed - the atmosphere of a club for family holidays, where each family member will find something to their liking.
Life in an oasis
Every day, Nikolai Nikolayevich wakes up at 7 am and takes an hour-long walk either on foot or on horseback. Then - dousing with cold water, shower, breakfast, and at 9 o'clock he is already at work. He usually combines his morning walk with a tour of the Otrada territory, which amazes with its beauty and well-being to all those who have been here for the first time. Nikolai Nikolayevich loves very much when it rains or snows during his morning exercise on horseback - then nature simply fascinates with its beauty. Growing up among the unique picturesque nature of the Carpathians, Nikolai Nikolaevich Gogol created a wonderful oasis with a park and lakes, lawns and paths, just one and a half kilometers from the stone jungle. How has your life changed since the time when CSC "Otrada" appeared? Not in everyday life, but rather as a way of thinking, attitude towards people, things, has the worldview changed?
Natalia. Of course, a lot has changed. First, we discovered new world It's all about horses. Secondly, we met new interesting people.
Nikolay. Now it is difficult to imagine life without Otrada. After all, this is everything - work, and time spent with the family, and a favorite hobby, the pleasure of communicating with friends and meeting new, often very interesting people.
How has your schedule changed over the past 13 years: has there been more or less free time? What do you prefer to spend it on? Describe your "standard" day.
Natalia. Good question, day to day is not necessary. The main thing is that we are constantly growing, developing, inventing something new, we have new infrastructure facilities, which means that, on the one hand, what has been working for a long time requires less time and effort, and new projects take up free time . All our family and friends use the infrastructure of the complex, live here, train in the equestrian club, come to the restaurant, which means that we spend a lot of time together.
Nikolay. I used to live and work in Yamal. These are constant trips, business trips, planes, helicopters - a heavy, exhausting schedule. More than 16 years lived in the north. Today's rhythm, taking into account the northern experience, I call deservedly pre-retirement. Standard day: in the morning, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., bypassing or bypassing the territory on a bicycle, viewing construction sites. From 8 to 9 - horseback riding or an hour of practicing another sport. From 10 to 12 - participation in operational management. From 12 to the evening - external contacts, work on promising projects, very often I combine it with business lunches and dinners. I try to go to bed before midnight.
Do you love to travel? And how often does it work? What is your favorite place on earth for you? Where have you never been but would like to visit?
Nikolay. We rest, as a rule, in winter - on skis, in summer - at sea, mainly in Europe. Sochi was discovered with the Olympics. Been there five times already. I really like regions of Russia and countries former USSR, methodically visit them. I don't really like long flights. I have not been to America, somehow, maybe I will get there. And I will fly to Kamchatka once again with pleasure. Altai, Yakutia, Tuva are also in the plans.
How does your interaction with horses look like today? Do you ride?
Natalia. I like to look at horses, I come to children's trainings, to competitions, but I don't ride.
Nikolay. In winter - mostly on weekends, in summer - almost every day I ride. Walks in the forest, gallops in a race circle, sometimes I change to show jumping horses.
Natalia. Of course, Otrada is a family club where every member of the family can find something to their liking. Despite my husband's attempts to put me on a horse, I still don't ride. But it's so nice, sitting on the veranda of the restaurant (my favorite corner of Otrada), to watch the training of children, husband, friends.
Nikolay. For us, it is definitely a family one, because all family members have their own hobbies here and everyone spends their time in Otrada. Next year we plan to finish building our house and move here to live. Most of all I love the forest. In any weather and for any occasion.
Is the club run jointly? And if so, how are the responsibilities divided between you? Who is responsible for what?
Natalia. global management carried out by Nikolai, this is the concept of developing the infrastructure of the complex, the construction of new facilities, and, of course, each structural unit has its own director or manager. My field of activity is restaurant, hospitality industry. I organize holidays, including two important ones sports events"Otrady" - stages of the World Cup in show jumping and dressage.
Nikolay. We have different management styles, so responsibilities are strictly distributed. I am engaged in the development of the entire project, including construction, and the organization of technical operation. Natalia manages the restaurant and the commercial part of the rental fund. Her practical view is very useful when designing new objects.
Tell us about your children. Characters, habits, hobbies and hobbies. Do they have some common, typical "Gogol" features? And what, in your opinion, on the contrary, most strongly emphasizes the individuality of each?
Natalia. There are four children in our family. The eldest is Dima, he is already an adult and lives his own life. Andrei is studying at the university, studying law. Unfortunately, now he rides a little, he moved to an iron horse. In general, a very purposeful young man, like his father. He loves everything new, is fond of motorsport. At the same time, he is very calm and reasonable, with a sense of humor. Nicholas is the soul. A very kind and generous son. Now he is actively engaged in show jumping and has already achieved some success (In particular, 2nd and 3rd places in the Russian championship among children, youths and juniors, as well as numerous victories and prizes in the Joy Cups in show jumping. - Note ed. .). Purposefulness he also does not hold. Likes to learn, one might say, a computer genius. Anya is our youngest daughter. She is a fan of horses, just loves them. Ready to ride every day. But at the same time, she has many other activities: dancing, learning languages, as well as painting and modeling. Anyuta is also a very purposeful girl and always follows the intended path. It is very convenient that all classes are held in one place, in Otrada. We have sports and creative studios. It is very important that children choose their own activities, and we just give them the opportunity to choose and slightly control their implementation.
Nikolay. The eldest son Dima graduated from the institute, recently served in the army, and is now receiving additional education. His area of interest is IT-technologies. Andryushka is in his second year, he seems to be serious, he has become noticeably older, but still a little ruffy. By the way, I was engaged in show jumping - it turned out great. Then he kind of froze. Kolya is in eighth grade. Very kind and sincere, diligent and very purposeful guy. He also goes in for equestrian sports and is very successful. The horses were handed over to him by Andrey, and the right pony from Kolya was transferred to Anyuta - our youngest, of course, beloved daughter. She loves horses, birds and animals, is fond of painting. Since childhood, she loved to walk around the house with me, she was keenly interested in all the processes. Very sensitive and responsible. In general, they are all different, but good and honest. I hope they grow up worthy and successful.
Are there plans for the future higher education Anna and Nicholas
Natalia. I would very much like Anyuta or Nikolai to connect their lives with medicine.
Nikolay. Nikolai with a set of his qualities could become a good manager. As for Anechka, I would like her to become a doctor or to be somehow connected with medicine.
Do you think your children will want to continue to lead the club in the future? How will the “distribution of powers” take place among them?
Natalia. Now it is difficult to guess how things will turn out in the future. Today, the infrastructure of our complex is huge, and everyone can find, if they want, something to their liking. It is important that children understand that leadership should and will be carried out not according to kindred priorities, but according to professional qualities.
Nikolay. Of course, I would like to hope that one of the children will pick up and continue what we started.
Today, the KSK Otrada, perhaps, has absolutely everything that is needed for professional equestrian sports and comfortable keeping of horses, as well as for the full-fledged leisure of the club's guests. Does this mean that the infrastructure of the complex will no longer change?
Natalia. The infrastructure cannot change. We try to be ahead of time and offer something that is not available in other clubs or complexes. Today I can say with confidence that in terms of size, infrastructure, proximity to Moscow, but at the same time good ecology, our complex has no equal. In our complex you can live, work, study and relax without leaving its territory.
Nikolay. The infrastructure of the complex will not change significantly. It will only be supplemented with new objects. This year we plan to launch a triathlon track. There are plans for a significant renovation of the veterinary center. Much attention is planned to be paid to improving the quality of services based on the existing infrastructure.
What, in your opinion, is the main "feature" of KSK "Otrada?
Natalia. We are approached by many people who want to build their complexes, asking for advice. Sometimes, when we visit other clubs, we see borrowed ideas from Otrada. But the most important thing, from my point of view, is to love what you are doing at the moment, and not to wait for every second return. And the "trick" is that it is necessary to build and develop gradually, paying attention to every little thing.
Nikolay. I think this is a sincere approach: to guests, work, employees. We are striving for soulfulness and love to permeate the whole life of Otrada.
In Russian realities (and, probably, not only in Russia), there is a tendency that the activities of an equestrian club are not capable of generating income for their owners. Does your own experience confirm or refute this?
Natalia. Of course, there is business, but there are hobbies, hobbies. If you are not professional sportsman, building a club is your hobby. Few people manage to turn a hobby into a business. Therefore, expanding and developing the infrastructure around the club, provided that the development is correct, it is possible to achieve financial success.
Nikolay. Two years after the start of operations, we managed to reach the level of operating payback. As for investments, they are very significant, and their return will be extended in time - estimated at least 20-25 years. From this we must conclude how attractive this business is.
For 13 years, the state of the equestrian industry in Russia has changed a lot: a huge number of new complexes have appeared, it has become more athletes, you won’t surprise anyone with international tournaments either ... Throughout its history, KSK Otrada has been the undisputed flagship of Russian equestrian sports. What is the role of your club in it today? Do you analyze the activities of your competitors? Name 3 more bases that, in your opinion, occupy the most important place in the equestrian industry.
Natalia. Thank you for the flagship of Russian equestrian sport. It is very pleasant that the most authoritative equestrian publication speaks of us in such a way. We plan to continue holding international tournaments. Every month we organize show jumping and dressage competitions. Despite the storms in the economy, we hope that our partners will continue to support these tournaments. As for other equestrian clubs, we consider them as partners in the development of the equestrian industry in Russia. We are happy to go to other clubs for competitions or simply by invitation. We recently visited the Maxima Stables club and were very impressed. We treat Novy Vek with great respect. KSK "Divny" was also impressed, very right club. "Konakovo" is a nice place, our son recently competed there. A lot of good clubs, and I don’t want to offend someone without naming.
KSK "Otrada" is famous for holding a large number major international tournaments. What does each such event mean to you: a sports festival, a headache, a grand party, a social event? Or something else?
Natalia. To be honest, at first it was a headache. As often happens, the person who was responsible for preparing the event turned out to be dishonest, and we fired him. So I had to comprehend a lot on my own, as they say, "in combat conditions." But after many years, now, this is my favorite sports holiday. Many friends do not leave in June on purpose to visit our tournament. And in September, the stage of the Dressage World Cup coincides with the City Day, and many make a choice in favor of Otrada. We have everything together: sports, parties, and social events!
Nikolay. Now for me this is a pleasant event. And at first it was quite troublesome, the preparation was carried out by the forces of a large team. It started almost six months ago. Today, this is already a well-established process. The employees are a relatively small team and, in my opinion, they work it out very successfully and professionally. My task at the preparation stage is to provide a financial component. And, of course, at the event itself I am a guest and at the same time a hospitable host.
Do you have idols, role models?
Natalia. My example is my husband. He made himself, made his choice in life, went to work in the north in his youth, was able to build a supermarket chain there, not having rich parents. He helped me realize my dream, open a restaurant, believed in my strength, while never pointing out mistakes, but simply helping and guiding me in business.
Nikolay. There are no idols. There are many worthy examples from which I learn something and adopt what is useful for myself. But the main life example is my father.
In your opinion, are you now able to take on the implementation of such a grandiose project from scratch as the construction of the Otrada CSC 13 years ago?
Natalia. Believe it or not, when visiting other clubs that are still at the beginning of their journey, I often ask myself this question. To be honest, I don't know. Then I somehow did not think, everything was easy and fun. And now, remembering, I understand that it was a colossal work, but I liked it and everything worked out.
Nikolay. Well, firstly, the Otrada project has not been completed yet. We are approximately in the middle of the road. Take on a new similar project? There are forces and experience, but the implementation of the Otrada project requires direct personal participation and full dedication. Replicating this is quite difficult and, probably, not correct. Let's finish one and then we'll see.
In what direction is your club developing today? What awaits him, and with him the Russian equestrian sport in 1, 5, 10 years? Are there ideas that have come a long time ago that are still “mothballed” and are waiting in the wings to be implemented?
Natalia. We are developing at a rapid pace, we are building housing, restaurants, new stables, arenas, gardens, business centers. Now Nikolai is realizing his old dream - a triathlon track.
Nikolay. What do you value most in people?
Natalia. Honesty, openness, ability to make friends, common interests, nepotism.

If one day you had not connected your life with horses and equestrian sports, what would you be doing now?
Natalia. IN primary school I had 3 options for my career: restaurant business, teacher at school or educator at kindergarten. There was only one left in the eldest - the restaurant business.
Nikolay. I can't imagine what I would be doing right now.
