At the initial stage of training this will cause discomfort, so start your exercises with equipment in shallow water. When you learn to breathe in water in a calm state, begin to learn how to move in the water. Flippers and hands will help you. It will take some time to practice rhythmic movements of the legs in fins with minimal waste of energy. The legs should move up and down, just like when swimming crawl style. Try to move your legs slowly, but with a greater swing amplitude. The legs should be straight at the knees, the movement is carried out with the entire leg “from the hip”. Make sure that your feet with fins are under the water and not splashing on the surface.

The body position when swimming should be horizontal, the lower back should be relaxed. But don't arch your back too much - you'll get tired quickly. In this position, you can swim in shallow water for a long time, exploring the underwater world.

Once you get comfortable with controlling your legs with fins, you can add arm work to your swimming technique - they make the same movements as in the crawl. This is already a sport of snorkeling, which involves high-speed swimming underwater for a time and duration of stay under water. You will spend several days learning this technique. Swimming with a snorkel and fins does not require sports speeds, as in classic crawl. The most important thing is to conserve your strength and breathe evenly.

Such swimming is immediately very difficult even for professional swimmers who are fluent in classical swimming styles - so your problems are understandable and solvable. Comfort and technique will come with practice, but first you will struggle with the snorkel flooding, water getting under the mask, glass fogging, and clumsiness in the fins. The main thing is that until you feel relatively free in your equipment, we do not advise you to go to depth. It's dangerous and difficult.

But when you become completely familiar with the equipment and learn to maintain balance in the water and even breathing, you will discover before your eyes a completely different, beautiful underwater world, for the sake of whose exotic beauty it was worth going through all the difficulties of learning to swim with a mask and snorkel!

What could be more beautiful than cutting through expanses of water and admiring the marine flora and fauna. However, to do this you need to be able to swim. And not just swim, but swim underwater - confidently and gracefully. Some people face such a problem as the inability to sink to the bottom. They just float to the surface. Others cannot open their eyes under water. Still others generally hold their breath for only 10 seconds, after which the smell of their oxygen comes to an end. How to overcome all these difficulties and learn to swim underwater?

How to feel the water

In order to learn to swim underwater, you need to be able to feel the water. These simple exercises will help you feel more confident in the water. It is best to perform them in a pool or shallow water. In any situation you should feel the bottom. You should not train in a river with a strong current - it can be dangerous.

  1. The first exercise is aimed at making you feel how the water pushes the human body to the surface. To do this, go waist-deep into the water, take in more air into your chest and sit down, hugging your knees. In a moment, your body will begin to rise and soon your shoulders will be on the surface. If you feel like you're running out of air, just stand up.
  2. The following exercise is aimed at getting rid of the fear of your face touching water. Simply lie face down on the surface of the water. If you are afraid that water may get into your ears, use special silicone earplugs for swimming. You can attach a special clothespin to your nose, although with a fixed air retention, water will not be able to get into your nose. While performing the exercise, you should lie on the surface of the water, like a jellyfish.
  3. The next exercise is called “asterisk”. It is similar to the previous one, but you need to lie face up, not down. You should feel the water, how perfectly it holds a person on the surface. In this position you can even breathe calmly.
  4. The next exercise is most convenient to do in the pool. You just need to start pushing off the side with your feet and moving. This will teach you to change your position in the water space.

These exercises are aimed at making you feel more confident. Most athletes who dive to depths of tens of meters say that they need to fight fear in shallow water. Gradual immersion will make you feel like a fish in water, in the literal sense of the word.

How to learn to dive

Most of those who dream of learning to swim underwater do not take into account the fact that they first need to learn to dive. After all, if you just lie on the surface of the water, you will not be able to dive to the depths. So how do you learn to dive?

The best way to learn to dive is in the pool. You need to start from the edge of the pool itself, and then, if desired, move on to towers of different heights. Stand right next to the side, bend over. Your arms should be down along your legs. Then point your hands into the water and, as it were, push your body to jump. You should enter the water with your hands first. Remember to take a deep breath before doing this. To go as deep as possible, you need to push off well with your feet.

Diving in a natural body of water is not very convenient because there is no ledge. You will have to jump and learn to dive into shallow water. You should not dive in little-known places, especially from a cliff, rock ledge, or steep bank. There may be hidden rocks at the bottom that you can hit your head on. In such cases, you can lose consciousness and choke - this is very dangerous.

Diving into the water is not difficult, the main thing is to overcome fear. Several intense training sessions, after which diving will be easy and even fun. However, this alone is not enough to be able to swim underwater.

Holding your breath is one of the main conditions of scuba diving. The amount of time you can stay underwater without breathing depends on the supply of oxygen your body can make. And the supply of oxygen, in turn, depends on the volume of the lungs and the rate of consumption of this oxygen. Lung capacity can be increased through constant training - this has been proven. Draw as much air into your chest as possible, trying to increase this volume each time. You can train with a balloon. Fill it in a few breaths, and then inhale as much air as possible from the balloon into your lungs. This way you can clearly see the volume of oxygen inhaled.

It is very important to reduce vigorous activity under water, which requires a lot of oxygen. You need to move very smoothly, all movements should be relaxed and soft. Professional swimmers say that while scuba diving they try to think less, be nervous, and worry less. Because active brain activity also requires a lot of oxygen.

First, prepare to dive into the water. After the dive is over, try to swim not up, as usual, but to the side, along the bottom. To do this you need to move your arms like a frog. You must have a bottom under your feet so that you can get back on your feet at any time.

Once you can swim without fear, then you can start training where it is already difficult to reach the bottom with your feet.

You can remember your family, shared holidays, etc. As a result, you will be distracted from unnecessary thoughts and panic due to lack of oxygen.

It's worth doing sports. If you exercise regularly, you will feel much better and more confident in the water. So, you can increase the additional volume of the chest and the need for oxygen.

Let's move on to active training

Active training should begin on land. Start by breathing through your mouth. You need to breathe evenly and measuredly. Then you need to take a deep breath and then hold your breath. This should be done using the chest, and not by squeezing the larynx. Use a stopwatch. Turn it on and see how long you can go without air. Try to improve your results. Do as many of these workouts as possible and you will notice that every day you can hold your breath for longer.

Once you start holding air in your lungs for quite a long time, you can move on to training in the water. Holding your breath there is much more difficult, because... When we are in water, we may experience subconscious fear. At this time, the heart begins to beat faster, and oxygen is consumed faster. It is at this moment that you need to try to relax to avoid such symptoms.

Make your first dive in cool water. This will help raise your blood pressure and calm your heartbeat. Because of this, in cold water you can go without oxygen for much longer than on land. You will see this during your training.

Hold on to something

It can be very difficult for beginners to stay underwater. To start, you can use something to hold on to. This will significantly extend your stay in the water. Such an object can be a ladder or handrails in a pool. If you reduce your physical activity, you can save a lot of oxygen. Once you have some practice, you can gradually release the handrails and try to dive into the water and try to hold your breath longer without holding on to anything.

Take help from friends

You shouldn't learn to hold your breath underwater for long periods of time without someone's help. There must be a person nearby who will insure you and help you if anything happens. You should note that holding your breath for a long time without proper preparation can lead to a heart attack or loss of consciousness. If no one is nearby, it can be fatal.

To prevent such situations from occurring, a loved one nearby should monitor your condition. If something happens, he will have to pull you out of the water.

Then you can breathe normally, as usual.

Remember that practice plays a special role. The more you practice, the faster you will learn to stay underwater for a long time. You can even come up with your own method and training routine that will suit your body. However, do not neglect some rules:

  1. Always train on dry land first;
  2. Use the help of friends and relatives;
  3. Don’t neglect your health and surface in time;
  4. Increase the time spent under water gradually.

Diving underwater is always dangerous. Therefore, think 100 times before diving: do you really need this? For what?

I strongly do not advise an inexperienced diver to dive under water more than 2 - 3 meters. You will definitely need time, strength, air to get back. But due to inexperience, all this may not be calculated. It is enough to cough and take a sip of water - and the dive can end sadly. So don't take risks. Please.

I do not advise even an advanced diver to dive deeper than 5 meters. Going deeper begins to seriously put pressure on the eyes and ears and it is necessary to “blow out”. It puts pressure on the eyes - it's bad with glasses. If you dive with a mask, you definitely need to do a purge. What it is? Exhale a small amount of air through your nose under the mask to compensate for the water pressure. When there is pressure on your ears, you need to pinch your nose and make a movement as if you were blowing your nose. Your blood pressure will immediately return to normal. All manipulations will take some air. And the remainder should be calculated so that it is enough for the rise. An inexperienced swimmer is often unable to allocate resources.

How to dive and swim breaststroke underwater

First you take a breath. Gently submerge under the water. You push off gently. After this, you begin to swim, making long strokes and touching your legs with your hands, after which you push with your legs.

Make all movements slowly, without rushing. This is the only way you can save air in your lungs and swim longer, admiring the underwater beauty or simply covering the distance underwater.

Diving underwater in the "dolphin"/"little mermaid" style

As I already said, this is a more energy-intensive dive. The first and main mistake that all people make when wanting to learn this style is moving the whole body while swimming. As a result, a person wriggles in the water like a worm, but there is no progress, let alone beauty.

To make it both beautiful and technical, do the following exercise:

grab the edge of the side, lie down on the water;

work only with your ankles - the rest of your body up to your knees should remain motionless!

Important! When performing the exercise, do not bend your knees too much! If you bend too much, you will push yourself back - there will be no progress.

Once your body has memorized the movement in the exercise, try it in swimming. Pushing off with the arrow, swim along the surface, working with just your ankles. At this time, do not try to think about beauty - work on technique. Swim smoothly, do not lift your heels/feet high above the surface of the water.

It is best to practice this exercise with fins. Fins will help you feel how to properly push off from the water. Your socks should be a little pointy, pointing inward, and your fingertips should feel like they’re throwing an imaginary ball.

Swim on the surface until you feel that you are confidently “holding your body” and working with your legs. Then you can move on to diving underwater.

How to swim and adjust your body position underwater

You should set yourself a direction underwater with your hands - like the spars of an airplane. If you press your chin to your chest and point your hands down, you will set yourself a deepening trajectory. Hit your feet and you will “push” yourself in a given direction.

A little practice will allow you to feel with your body how direction is regulated. At the same time, don’t get carried away and don’t forget to take breaths every 3 – 5 meters! And under no circumstances dive into the depths immediately. Let there be a column of water no more than 1 meter above you at first.
